Resolved Question: whats the best bottle warmer?
(Sat, 01 Nov 2008 20:07:39 GMT)
i need a new one. my old one you simply added water each time and plugged it in. (sparks fly when u unplug it) there wasnt an automatic shutoff and sometimes the steam would drip off the bottom of the bottle and burn us. it was only $7 and has lasted 3 months but i think its time to bury it. im not into the day and night one by advent i think. i dont need to cool the bottles, just warm them. why cool them anyway? thats what the fridge is for. so i'd like one with an automatic shut off and would fit my dr brown bottles. whats the cheapest and best??
this is my old one:

Resolved Question: How to use a Microwave Advent Bottle Sterilizer?
(Mon, 20 Oct 2008 12:08:08 GMT)
My sister just gave me an advent bottle sterilizer for the microwave and she didn't have the user guide with it. It looks pretty simple but I just want to make sure I use it correctly. It looks like i put 200ml of water in the bottom and then heat it in the microwave. But I have no idea how long to heat it. Anyone know? Thanks,

Resolved Question: Do Advent Tempo liners fit into Playtex Drop-in bottles?
(Sun, 28 Sep 2008 15:11:23 GMT)

Resolved Question: What do people think of the Dr.Brown's bottles?
(Fri, 26 Sep 2008 13:03:04 GMT)
I am pregnant with my second child and I am looking at the Dr.Brown's bottle this time around. For my daughter I used ADVENT and I liked them but she had colic and she spit up so much and I have read reviews for Dr.Brown's and it's really in between. I want to know what you other mothers think of them. I know they are expensive and there are a lot of pieces to clean but I think it would be worth it.

Resolved Question: Advent Tempo vs Advent Tempo Naturally Bottles?
(Mon, 01 Sep 2008 21:59:47 GMT)
I am planning on breastfeeding, and everything I read suggests Advent Tempo bottles for pumping purposes. However, when my husband and I went to Babies R Us today to purchase them, there were two kinds- Advent Tempo and Advent Tempo Naturally. None of the sales people could tell us the difference and I was hoping someone here might know. I tried to find out info online as well, but had no luck. Any insight at all would be greatly appreciated!

Voting Question: 5 week old baby, breast milk expressing & storage - can I add what I've expressed during the day together?
(Fri, 29 Aug 2008 02:11:19 GMT)
babe has been exclusively bf, but I'm getting to the point where I'd like a couple of hours break, and would like dad to feed. I've bought an Advent breast pump, but am only getting 2oz at the most at any one time, and want to be sure I'm expressing enough. What's the best way to capture and store the milk - eg, if I get 2oz in one bottle, sterilize the pump again and then get another 2oz later in the day in another, put them in the fridge - can I add them together to make up a bottle? I'm worried that I shouldn't add fresh express to a re-fridge express, sterilizing etc...
Thanks girls, advice much appreciated : D

Resolved Question: Tips on baby learning to use sippy cup?
(Wed, 30 Jul 2008 13:35:50 GMT)
Trying to get my 7 mo old to use a sippy cup. The nurse said you have to introduce it to him between 6-7 months. I've purchased sippy cups by plaxtex, advent, first years, Heinz- but the cheap throw away hard plastic ones seem to be his favorite.
Fallowed the nurses advice to fill it with water and let him play- well, thats all he really does is play with it! I bring it out everyday, one day he did suck on it a little so i added Breastmilk and he did one day drink a few tablespoons out of it. So, what else can I do to help him? I tryed to feed him bmilk when he was hungry out of it but he screamed! What else can I do??
Should mention he only rarely drinks from a bottle so I don't think he's that attatched to it- mostly right from mummy.

Resolved Question: Teaching a baby who only nurses to take a bottle???
(Mon, 14 Jul 2008 02:17:35 GMT)
I have a baby that is 2 and a half months old, I nurse her and feed her a bottle about 1x a week, she recently has refused to take it, I finally got 3 ounces down her this morning after 4 hours of screaming on and off, I've tried 3 different types of bottle nipples, avent, the normal and playtex, she was taking advent fine... how can I get her to take both, it is pumped milk so it has nothing to do with formula... she just tastes the bottle and starts screaming. Have also tried having husband feed her bottle. Any suggestions?

Resolved Question: 3 month old with weird symptoms....?
(Sun, 09 Mar 2008 03:49:41 GMT)
Ok so, lets start off by saying that my daughter always squirmed a bit whenever I fed her....But around 2 months of age she started squirming alot, fighting bottles and throwing most of them back up..i thought it was the advent bottles so I swiched to Playtex drop-ins whoch seemed to help at the time, well all of a sudden last week she just strted screaming and stiffening up when I tried feeding her and absolutly would not eat her bottles, so I took her to the doctor and he said not to swich the formulas because she was thriving off of it and was healthy but had acid reflux and gave me meds to give her, well...the medicine has not worked becides acheiving to give her a very nasty bout of diareah(i know its spelled wrong) and one day just would not eat her bottles for anything, she didnt eat for two days basicly on taking a bottle before she went to bed, so I went out and got her Good Start formula, and shes doing great with it so far....has anybody went through this? advice plz...
I can't really swich her formula gradually because if i stick a bottle made with similac in her mouth, she screams like crazy, arches her back and stiffens up, its impossible to feed her that way, I cant put her through it anymore, its like shes in pain.

Resolved Question: Baby will not take a bottle.?
(Sun, 24 Feb 2008 06:46:48 GMT)
I was planning on going back to work next sunday and now im pretty sure i cant because my breast fed daughter refused to take a bottle. Ive tried the breast flow from the learning curve and the adiri bottles, also evenflo and a ton of others. she used to drink from the advent and then i switched it to glass evenflo because ive heard so many horrible things about bpa? so any way is there any miracles out there to get my baby not to only need me to nurse her.. or should i just quit my job now?
Uh, i wasnt just thinking of myself if i was doing that i would go back to work and make her just take the bottle with out even trying to find a solution.
She is 7 weeks old.
ive tried having my husband feed her and she wont take the bottle from him either, i dont want to supplement with formula, i did that until my milk came in and her belly was a mess, at 2 days old she was up all night screaming, pretty much with my milk she seems to just have a burp or 2 and she has her decent amount of farts haha but she doesnt scream when she is pooping. i would just hate to do that to her. but i am going to try to get out of the room before she wakes up tomrow and have my husband give her a freshly pumped bottle and pray she takes it. I dont have to work because i am going to college to work from home but it was my dream job doing make up :( . But she is more important then a job :)

Resolved Question: What is the best sippy cup to train a child who doesn't want anything but a bottle?
(Thu, 31 Jan 2008 19:45:21 GMT)
I have tried to get my daughter to start drinking out of a sippy cup. I have bought four different kinds of sippy cups thinking that I would find one that she would like, but she still will only take a bottle. I think it is because she can't figure out that she needs to suck on the spout so I tried taking the insert out so that the liquid can flow freely and she still wont take the cup. I have tried different types of lids. I obviously haven't found the right one. I have tried a nubby, advent and gurber graduate kinds of sippy cups. can anyone suggest one that might work?

Resolved Question: Son wont drink from bottle???
(Sat, 05 Jan 2008 14:39:40 GMT)
My son is almost 6 1/2 months old. He wont take a bottle anymore. He has been teething so it can be due to that, but I have been trying a sippy cup. I have the Advent ones. And he has a hard time with those. It almost has to be straight up and down for him to get anything out of it. What do you think the best sippy cups are for training and going from the bottle?? Are there any your baby did best with?? There are so many kinds, I dont know what kind is best. What do you think?? Are there any other tips for going to a sippy cup???? Thank You!!
Well actually yes it is a problem, he is not eatting. He went from eatting 32 ounces a day and the last couple of days he has only been eatting 8 ounces a day, if that, so yes it is a problem!!!
Thanks to a few of you who gave me serious answers!! It is a problem when your baby stops eattings from 32 ounces to 8 if even that. So thanks for your advice, to the ones who actually answered the question properly!!

Resolved Question: Weaning off bottle??
(Fri, 30 Nov 2007 06:02:14 GMT)
When did you wean your baby totally off the bottle?? What is the average age?? I know this may sound weird, but Im a first time Mom so I have no idea. I just asked a question about when I should introduce the sippy cup. I think I will try that now, Im pretty sure he is ready. He holds his own bottle and has been on solids since 3 months from Acid Reflux. But when and how do you start weaning your baby off the bottle?? So then do you just put the formula in the sippy cup?? And what sippy cups work best for starting out?? I saw the Advent brand for beginners, has anyone used those??
Sorry Im a first time Mom, and Im not sure about the whole sippy cup and weaning off the bottle thing!!!!

Resolved Question: Anyone manage to breastfeed after stopping for a month or more?
(Fri, 07 Sep 2007 14:29:19 GMT)
I know that it's possible, and that adoptive mothers who have never had kids can bf, so when I returned to work and my supply dwindled, birth control interfered, my baby preferred the bottle, and my family all told me to stop, I felt guilty after a month and am now working to build my supply back up. My baby was never bf exclusively because I was in so much pain after delivery that I was miserable for 7 full weeks.
My son is 3 months and I've been pumping every 2-3 hours for about a week and a half with a manual advent pump. I take Fenugreek and drink tea and I saw a slight improvement (actually got a few squirts instead of drips). Yesterday me electric pump arrived and I can't get more than 2 drops from each breast with it (Medela PISA). I'm wondering if this is a sign to give up?
I just need some encouragement and was hoping to hear from some mothers who were able to breastfeed after stopping for about a month or more. Especially if I know that they exist here!
I've contacted my local LLL leader and she wasn't too much help, unfortunately. She could only suggest things I already knew. I'm going to call a LC today at my son's pediatrician's office and hopefully meet with her soon. I never knew how devastated I could feel after stopping bfing.

Resolved Question: Baby coming soon! and there are too many choices!?
(Sat, 11 Aug 2007 22:53:28 GMT)
okay...I am being induced on Thursday, and I am planning on bottle feeding, I am stuck between 3 bottles, and 2 nipples...so I was hoping you guys could give some opinions:
bottle choices are: Advent, Dr Brown, or the playtex ventaire
and then of course which is better...standard nipple? or the natural nipple? and then there are the endles and endless choices of formula....but which one is best? I'm leaning more towards Carnation Good Start, but they have the Iron fortified, then the iron fortified supreme with DHA and ARA, and now the Natural Cultures with Dha and Ara, (apparently the new one helps to promote a healthy immune system, but it doesn't state if its for babies with and unhealthy one or all babies) please help! and please no comments on breastfeeding, I've already struggled with this, I tried with my first child and while it may be TMI, the fact of the matter is...I basically lost my right nipple due to her feeding on it.....
the last straw was when I tried to pump and saw blood from my nipple mixing with the breastmilk...I am not going through that again.
I know everyone is saying that the hospital will start the baby off on enfamil or other formulas, but the hospital I'm going to allows the baby to stay in the room with you, in fact they encourage it, and so I was actually planning on bringing my own bottle and formula to the hospital so there was no nipple confusion between the hospital's bottles and the ones I choose, same with the formula, now I'm worried that maybe they won't let me?....I'll have to ask,
Veronica...I have to know...whats with the popsicles?

Resolved Question: breast to bottle a good idea for a newborn baby?
(Sun, 24 Jun 2007 23:05:49 GMT)
my question is this i have a son who is 1 week and 2 days old. so far i have been breastfeeding him exclusively, but since he sleeps so much during the day i have been getting extremely full i can pump a 4 ounce bottle in between every feeding if i wanted to i will be going back to work in about 7 to 8 more week in which time i will be pumping for him so that other people can feed him. my main question though is do you think he is too young to start him on the bottle now to get him used to going back and forth from bottle to breast. I do not want to cause nipple confusion and i have also heard that bottles flow faster than the breast and can make the baby want the bottle instead of the breast because he wont have to work as hard to get the milk out. I have the advent isis manual pump with the advent isis bottles in all honesty it would be a great break to get to have daddy help me feed every once in a while but i dont want to do anything that will mess up the routine we already have

Resolved Question: My 11 week old son is rejecting bottles.?
(Sun, 24 Jun 2007 02:24:31 GMT)
My breastfeed son used to take bottles really well. We would give him 2-3 a week so he would be used to them by the time that I went back to work. Starting last week he started to reject the bottles. Has this happened to anybody else and if so, what did you do to get him to take a bottle again? We have been using Playtex and Advent bottles.
We are not feeding him formula, only expressed milk.

Resolved Question: What kind of bottles?

Resolved Question: Moms Only- Did I ruin my nipples?
(Sat, 19 May 2007 21:56:37 GMT)
I use the advent pump and bottles. I usually hand wash all that.... BUT... I decided to use the dishwasher today to wash my breast pump, baby bottles and nipples. When they came out they were orange in color. This most likely happened due to spaghetti sauce in the dishes and pot. I was unable to get the orange out of my usually very clear colored nipples. Can I still use them? or are they ruined? Thanks!

Resolved Question: The Bible says Ishmael was sent away 14 years before the birth of Isaac ?
(Wed, 25 Apr 2007 04:14:59 GMT)
It is abundantly clear from the story in Gen. 21:14-19 that Ishmael was a little baby at that time. Following is the documentation of this statement:
According to Gen. 16:16 Abraham was 86 years old when Ishmael was born. And according to Gen.21:5 Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac was born. It follows that Ishmael was already fourteen years old when his younger brother Isaac was born.
According to Gen. 21:14-19, the jealousy incident took place after Issac was weaned. Biblical scholars tell us that “the child was weaned about the age of three”.
It follows that when Hagar and Ishmael were taken away Ishmael was a full grown teenager seventeen year old.
The profile of Ishmael in Gen. 21:14-19, however , is that of a small baby and not of a teenager.
Why ?
First : According to the Interpreters Bible , the original Hebrew for Gen.21:14 was “…and put the child upon her shoulder”. The same reading is rendered in the Revised Standard Edition of the Bible.
How would a mother carry a Seventeen year old teenager “upon her shoulder? Certainly he was strong enough to carry his mother !
Ishmael must have been a baby .
Second : In Gen. 21:15 we are told that Hagar “cast” the child under one of the shrubs. Again, according to this Biblical text Ishmael must have been a baby and not a seventeen year old man.
Third: In Gen. 21:16 we are told that Hagar sat away so that she may not see the death of the child before her eyes. Is that a profile of a husky seventeen year old teenager who was probably capable of being worried about his mother dying before his eyes? Or is it obviously a profile of a small helpless baby or at most a small child?
Fourth : According to Gen. 21:17, the angels told Hagar “arise lift up the lad”. Is a seventeen year old young man a proper object to be “lifted up” by a woman? Or is that a reference to a small child or baby?
Fifth: In Gen. 21:19, we are told that Hagar went to fill the bottle with water “and give the lad a drink”. One would expect a strong young man of seventeen to go and bring water to his mother instead. (Arab history has shown the miraculous well in Mecca was the first sacred spot to the Ishmaelites long before the advent of Prophet Muhammad.)
The non Jewish version of the story is fully consistent and coherent from A to Z; Ishmael was a baby and Isaac was not born yet when this incident took place. This coherence and consistency are confirmed by centuries-old traditions and even actual locations in Mecca where Hagar and Ishmael settled. This clearly implies that the real reason behind their settlement in Arabia (Paran) was not the dictation, jealousy, ego or sense of racial superiority on the part of Sarah. It was rather God’s plan; pure and simple.
It may be relevant to indicate that this issue is not the only instance of inconsistency in respect to Ishmael’s story. The Interpreters Bible compares the story of Hagar and Ishmael in Gen. 21:14-19 with that in an earlier chapter (Gen. 16:1-16) and concludes “the inclusion in Genesis of both stories so nearly alike and yet sufficiently different to be inconsistent, is one of many instances of the reluctance of the compilers to sacrifice any of the traditions which has become established in Israel.” (Interpreters Bible, ibid, p. 604)

Resolved Question: Are my baby bottles going to give my baby cancer?
(Wed, 14 Mar 2007 04:09:42 GMT)
A friend of ours shared a safety report from mindfully.org (dated April 1999) which warns against using polycarbonate baby bottles (e.g. Dr. Brownes, Advent, Evenflo) as they can cause cancer. Apparently a chemical called bisphenol-A (also known as d BPA) can leach into the formula over time. We then did a little research and found an article from Money Magazine (Feb 07) which stated the same findings. However I cannot find anything on Consumer Reports to validate this issue or recommend which bottles to buy. Are my Dr. Brown bottles okay or should I be worried about this?
Articles:

What do you make of the various new reports in the past few weeks?
Thanks everyone for all your responses. For those interested in glass bottles and find that your local Whole Foods is sold out (due to the recent news story) we've successfully found them for sale online at Radiant Life...

Resolved Question: our 1 month newborn keeps falling asleep on the breast. Should she exclusively pump?
(Mon, 23 Oct 2006 20:11:33 GMT)
My wife is considering exclusively pumping to make sure our baby gets enought to drink/eat..becasue she constantly falls asleep on her breast. The lack of knowledge if she is getting enough food is also stressing my wife bigtime. Any suggestions? The baby seems to drink better with a bottle. We use advent newborn size 1 nipple.
